Abstract

Multi Protocol Label Switching ( MPLS ) is a Metropolitan Area Network ( MAN ) technology  using a label for the data transmission process . The label will be added between layer 2 and layer 3. With the label , the data will be sent in turn, to all connected nodes ( such as switch technology ) . So that the data can be sent to destination quickly .

Virtual Private Lan Service (VPLS) is a point-to-multipoint tunneling technology of layer 2 over MPLS networks. By utilizing 1 Public IP and mac address, the data packet exchange between Customer Edge router through public MPLS network is done in a transparent manner. To get a quality value of the use of VPLS network running on the MPLS, we tested video and audio streaming to measure the bandwidth utilization, latency, packet loss, and bandwidth delay product as research parameters.

From the test results of bandwidth utilization, latency, packet loss, and bandwidth delay product, it was concluded that the minimum bandwidth requirements for accessing the video streaming with the highest quality is 1 Mbps with HD video specification 720p, 2.5Mbit / s, AAC 192kbit / s, 48kHz. While the minimum bandwidth requirement for audio streaming with the highest quality is 512 kbps with HQ audio specification 320 Kbit / s, 48kHz, stereo. On the other hand, implementation of MPLS VPLS network does not have a significant difference with the MPLS network without the VPLS.
